Dignity Village, located in NE Portland, is a membership-based community that has been providing shelter for up to 60 individuals per night since 2000. As a democratically self-governed community, our mission is to offer transitional housing that fosters community and self-empowerment, serving as a radical experiment to combat homelessness.

We emerged from the doorways of Portland’s streets, from beneath bridges, and from the bushes of public parks. With the recent overturning of Portland’s inhumane and Draconian camping ban on constitutional grounds, we no longer need to hide. We came with a vision of a brighter future, not only for ourselves but for all of Portland – a vision of a green, sustainable urban village where we can live peacefully and contribute to the improvement of our own lives and the overall quality of life in the city. We sought refuge from the cold of a December day, and we refuse to return to the way things were.

It’s important to note that we do not have beds available for shelter at any time other than Winter, and our housing structures often have a waiting list. Our winter shelter also serves as a greenhouse for the rest of the year. Please refer to our Village Intake Committee process for intake details.

Our mission is to establish a green, sustainable urban village for those who are in need of shelter and unable to find it elsewhere. We believe it is crucial to create a community-based living facility that meets the basic needs of individuals living on the streets in a stable, sanitary environment, free from violence, theft, disruption of peace, drugs, and alcohol.
