A Community Effort to Address Homelessness
Agape Village is being developed on a portion of the Central Nazarene Church property, situated in an under-resourced area of Portland that lacks adequate support for the houseless population.
Since the church’s inception, there have been individuals experiencing homelessness living on or near the property. Several years ago, the church embarked on a journey to truly understand the meaning of loving God and our neighbors. Inspired by successful models from other villages, collaborations with other churches and organizations, and a genuine desire to extend compassion to our houseless neighbors, Agape Village was born.
The overarching goal is to create a village that engages the entire community in providing a helping hand to our neighbors in need. We aspire for Agape Village to be a win-win for everyone involved, promoting community safety and empowering individuals to attain health and stability.
The village draws inspiration from other self-governed villages like Opportunity Village in Eugene and Dignity Village in Portland. Prospective residents will go through an application and screening process, where the rules and expectations will be clearly communicated. We aim for our guests to be willing to meet these expectations and actively contribute to the well-being and success of the community.
